John Wilson
John Wilson tells the life stories of people who have died recently. This week:听Sir Colin听St John听Wilson, Jerry Falwell, Kate Webb and Professor John Henry.
Sir Colin St John (Sandy) Wilson听
Architect听who has died听aged 85.

Among the contenders for the Gulbenkien museum of the year prize this year, is the Pallant House art gallery in Chicester. Although every museum is run as a team effort, Pallant House鈥檚 nomination owes more to one person than most. The new extension to the existing Georgian gallery was designed by the architect Sir Colin St John Wilson (or Sandy Wilson as he was known) - primarily to house a magnificent collection of post-war British art that he bequeathed to the museum.听

If Pallant House wins, the Gulbenkien prize would be a fitting tribute to an architect more often associated with a far more controversial building. Sandy Wilson designed the British Library on the Euston Road in central London which 鈥 with countless delays and soaring costs 鈥 opened in 1997, more than 25 years after it was first planned, only to be branded as an 鈥渁cademy for secret police鈥 by Prince Charles. John Wilson talks to architecture critic Hugh Pearman and to artist Sir Peter Blake.

Sir Colin St John Wilson听 was born March 14th 1922. He died May 14th 2007.
The Reverend Jerry Falwell
Preacher, televangelist and lobbyist who has died aged 73.

The Reverend Jerry Falwell used to tell the vast congregations that would gather at one of his evangelical mega-churches to vote only for politicians who carried a Bible. Jerry Falwell injected a听big dose of fundamentalist Christianity into modern American politics. After setting up several churches and the Christian-based Liberty University, he built a faithful audience of millions on radio and television. And in 1979 Falwell founded the Moral Majority pressure group, campaigning against gay rights, abortion and welfare spending. Ronald Reagan鈥檚 landslide election victory the following year owed a debt, in part, to the influence of the Reverend Falwell.

Despite helping to establish the deep-rooted power of the American Christian right, he continued to blaze a controversial trail on public life, most notably in 2001 when he blamed liberals, homosexuals and pro-abortionists for the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre.

John Wilson talks to William Martin who wrote With God On Our Side - a book about America鈥檚 Christian fundamentalists and Mel White who ghost-wrote Falwell鈥檚 autobiography If I Should Die Before I Wake.

The Rev Jerry Falwell was born on August 11th 1933. He died on May 15th 2007.

Kate Webb听
Journalist听 who has died aged 64.

Kate Webb, one of the great woman war reporters, who survived battles in Vietnam and, later, Afghanistan, has died from cancer aged 64. Born in New Zealand, she moved to Australia as a child and lost both her parents in a car crash when she was 18. In 1966, aged 23, she left her job on a Sydney daily paper and headed off to Saigon to cover the escalating Vietnam War. She was famously captured by North Vietnamese troops in Cambodia, emerging from the jungle after 23 days to read her own obituaries, an event that challenged her trademark insistence that 鈥榯he reporter is never the story鈥.

Kate Webb covered most of the major events in Asia until retiring in 2001. Journalist Vaudine England, who first met Kate in Jakarta in 1985, sent Last Word this tribute to her friend.

Kate Webb was born March 24th 1943. She died May 13th 2007.
Professor John Henry
Toxigologist听 who has died听aged 68.

In the coroner鈥檚 inquests into the deaths Russian journalist Alexander Livinenko, Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer and 18 year old Leah Betts, who died after taking ecstasy, the expert opinion of Professor John Henry was crucial. Professor Henry was one of the world鈥檚 leading authorities on drugs and poisons. He was a tireless campaigner against drug taking amongst young people and his frequent media appearances on the subject resulted in him being dubbed Mr E.

John Wilson talked to his friend and colleague Dr Michael Platt.

Professor John Henry听 was born March 11th 1939. He听died May 8th 2007.
