Matthew Bannister tells the life stories of people who have died recently. This week: Alan Coren, Deborah Kerr and Reverend Professor C.F.D. Moule.
Alan Coren
Writer, broadcaster听and听former editor of Punch magazine who has died aged 69.

Alan Coren was also a team captain on 鈥淐all My Bluff鈥 and the author of many books. Since 1988 he had written a popular column for the Times newspaper. The editor of the Times, Robert Thomson said Coren had been a 鈥渨itty and thoughtful tour guide through life鈥.

He was born in 1938, the son of a builder and was educated at Wadham College, Oxford and Yale University.

Alan Coren made his first appearance on the News Quiz in 1975 and Matthew Bannister talked to听fellow panellists听Jeremy Hardy and Francis Wheen, his contemporary at Oxford, Lord Melvyn Bragg听and Christopher Matthew who wrote for Punch when Alan Coren was editor. The pair went on to celebrate reaching the milestone of retirement age in the Radio 4 series 鈥淔reedom Pass鈥.

Alan Coren was born听June 27th听1938.听He died October 18th 2007.
Deborah Kerr
Actor who has died aged 86

The film star Deborah Kerr was born in Helensburgh overlooking the Firth of Clyde in Scotland. But that didn鈥檛 stop Hollywood publicists from selling her as an English rose. Kerr specialised in playing beautiful women who 鈥 whilst on the surface appearing rather prim and proper 鈥 were suffering inner turmoil. Her two most famous roles were as the strait-laced governess clashing with Yul Brynner鈥檚 monarch in The King and I听听听and as the adulterous army wife听 with Burt Lancaster in From Here To Eternity.

Deborah Kerr originally trained as a ballet dancer, winning a scholarship to Sadler鈥檚 Wells. But she quickly became fed up with always being in the back row of the swans. When she started her acting career with walk on roles at the Open Air Theatre in Regents Park she was spotted by an agent who introduced her to the British film director Michael Powell. They worked together on a number of films, including one of the defining roles of her career Black Narcissus.听

Matthew Bannister talks to film historian Sir Christopher Frayling,听actor Jean Simmons and Marni Nixon who dubbed her voice in The King and I听 and An Affair to Remember听.

Deborah Jane Kerr (Deborah Kerr Viertel) was born September 30th 1921. She died October 16th 2007.

Reverend Professor Charlie Moule
Priest and theologian who has died aged 98.

For more than twenty years, the Reverend Professor C.F.D. Moule held the oldest chair at Cambridge University. He was Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity 鈥 a chair which had been founded in 1502 and held at one time by Erasmus. The theologian听 who was known to his friends as Charlie听 was a distinguished biblical scholar who published a number of influential books, including The Birth of the New Testament听 in 1962 and The Origins of Christology听 in 1977. He was Dean of Clare College for 6 years and a fellow of the college for more than sixty.

Matthew Bannister talks to one of his students, the Archbishop of Canterbury,听Rt Rev.听Rowan Williams.听

Professor Charlie Moule was born December 3rd 1908听. He died September 30th 2007.
