Matthew Bannister
Matthew Bannister听tells the life stories of people who have died recently: Sir Nicholas Henderson, Ian Carr, Richard Aoki, Eric Simms and Natasha Richardson.
Sir Nicholas Henderson
British diplomat who has died aged 89

Sir Nicholas Henderson was Britain鈥檚 ambassador to Washington during the Falklands crisis. He played an important part in securing American support for military action.

Sir Nicholas was educated at Stowe School and Hertford College Oxford.
He started his diplomatic career in 1942 and was given his first ambassadorial posting to Warsaw in the late1960鈥檚. Sir Nicholas went on to be ambassador to Bonn and then to Paris. He retired from the French post in 1979 with a final, outspoken telegram strongly criticising Britain鈥檚 attitude to Europe and suggesting that the nation had become 鈥減oor and unproud鈥.

Sir Nicholas Henderson was 1 April 1919 and died 16 March 2009.
Ian Carr
Jazz musician who has died aged 75

Ian Carr was a pioneering jazz trumpeter who composed, taught and wrote about the music he loved. He founded the jazz rock band Nucleus, wrote an acclaimed biography of Miles Davis and The Rough Guide to Jazz and became an associate professor at the Guildhall School of Music in London. Ian Carr was born in Scotland but grew up in the North East of England. He studied English at Newcastle University and served with the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers before spending a couple of years travelling around Europe with his trumpet. His career began in earnest when he returned to Tyneside in 1960 to join his brother Mike鈥檚 band the EmCee Five.

Ian Carr was born 21 April 1933 and died 25 February 2009.
Richard Aoki
Civil Rights campaigner who has died aged 71

Richard Aoki was the Asian American who became a Field Marshall in the Black Panther Party. He had met the founders of the party 鈥 Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, whilst studying at Merrit College in California in the 1960s. For Richard Aoki, this was the start of a lifetime of radical campaigning for the rights of ethnic minorities in the USA. He moved to the University of California at Berkeley during a period of intense political activity among the students and also became one of the leaders of the Third World Liberation Front.

Richard Aoki was born November 20 1938 and died 15 March 2009.
Eric Simms
Broadcaster and naturalist who has died aged 87

For forty years, Eric appeared on 大象传媒 nature programmes sharing his passion for wildlife and demonstrating his extraordinary skill at recording the sounds of the natural world. Eric read history at Merton College, Oxford where he ran a bird ringing trap on Christ Church meadows. After war service with bomber command, he became a teacher before becoming director of the 大象传媒鈥檚 wildlife recording projects.

Matthew Bannister talks to Eric Simms鈥 friend and fellow naturalist Leo Batten and to one of the UK鈥檚 leading wildlife sound recordists, Chris Watson.

Eric Simms was born 24 August 1921 and died 1 March 2009.


Natasha Richardson
Actress who has died aged 45

A member of the Redgrave family, Natasha was the daughter of actress Vanessa Redgrave and director Tony Richardson. As a successful actress, Natasha began her career in regional theatre at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds. Her first professional work in London鈥檚 West End was in Anton Chekhov鈥檚 The Seagull in 1985. In 1998 she won a Tony Award for her performance in Cabaret. In 2003,听Natasha returned to the London stage in the production of Ibsen鈥檚 The Lady from the Sea. Her film credits include Nell, The Parent Trap and The White Countess.

Natasha Richardson was born May 11, 1963 and died March 18, 2009.
