Matthew Bannister
Matthew Bannister听tells the life stories of people who have died recently. This week: Peter Hawkins, Nancy de Vries, Bill Miller, ES Turner and Mickey Spillane.
PETER HAWKINS
Actor and voice artist who has died aged 82.

Peter Hawkins was the creator of the voices and language of the Flowerpot Men and scores of other recognisable television characters including, the daleks and cybermen from Dr Who. Along with children's cartoon series Captain Pugwash and Zippy from Rainbow.

Peter Hawkins first landed a television job as the voice of a puppet called Mr Turnip in the children's programme Whirlygig.

Matthew Bannister spoke to his son,Silas Hawkins, who听has followed in his father's footsteps providing the voices for a Cbeebies show 'Summerton Mill'.

Peter Hawkins was born on April 3rd 1924. He died on July 8th 2006.
NANCY DE VRIES
Aboriginal activist who has died aged 74.

Nancy de Vries was one of the stolen generation - young aborigines who were forcibly removed from their families by the government. She overcame her traumatic childhood to become a determined campaigner for the rights of fractured families. On her death members of the New South Wales Parliament in Australia stood in silent memorial. A rare honour.

Phil Mercer reports from Sydney on the life of Nancy de Vries. He talks to Dr. Fiona Nicol, who curated an exhibition that explored the life of Nancy De Vries and Janice Reed University of Western Sydney and Nancy 's daughter Meegan.

Nancy de Vries was born听1932. She died in 2006.

BILL MILLER
Frank Sinatra's pianist who has died aged 91.

Bill Miller was Frank Sinatra's accompanist and arranger for more than 40 years. Sinatra relied on Miller's ability to read music and it was Miller's laconic, relaxed piano style which set the mood for classic Sinatra songs such as 'One For My Baby'.

Miller and Sinatra were so close that when Miller's house was swept away in a mudslide and his wife killed - Sinatra identified the body while Miller recovered from his injuries in hospital.

The critic and broadcaster Russell Davies explains their unique musical partnership.

Bill Miller was born on February 3rd 1915. He died on July 11th 2006.
ES TURNER
Writer and social historian who has died aged 96.听

Writer and social historian ES Turner was known for his unerring eye for the eccentric details of English life. A contributor to Punch for over fifty years he wrote regularly for the Oldie and the London Review of Books as well as publishing numerous books on social history.

Tony Benn explains his admiration for ES Turner's book "Roads to Ruin" (1950).

Matthew Bannister discusses the life and work of E S Turner with his former colleague at Punch Miles Kington and to Paul Laity who commissioned his work for the London Review of Books.

ES Turner was born on 17 November 1909. He died on July 6 2006.
MICKEY SPILLANE
American crime writer who has died aged 88.

Mickey Spillane sold millions of copies of his pulp fiction stories of Mike Hammer, Private Eye. Their sharp titles "My Gun is Quick," "Vengeance is Mine!," "Kiss Me, Deadly" matching his quick fire savage style. But despite his success he was never appreciated by the critics.
"If the public likes you, you're good," he once said. "Those big-shot writers could never dig the fact that there are more salted peanuts consumed than caviar."听

He was Jehovah's Witness who didn't smoke and rarely drank, living a life very different in style to his books.

American crime writer Wallace Stroby writes a tribute to him which is听read by Ewan Bailey. Wallace Stroby is the author of 'The Heartbreak Lounge' and 'The Barbed-Wire Kiss'.

Mickey Spillane was born on 9 March 1918. He died on July 17 2006.
