Matthew Bannister
Matthew Bannister tells the life stories of people who have died recently. This week: James Cameron, Peter Kennedy, Monsignor Denis Faul and Alan Kotok.
James Cameron
who survived a lynching attempt and went on to found a museum dedicated to combatting racism.听 He has died in America aged 92.

On a hot August night in 1930 the townspeople of Marion, Indiana witnessed the lynching of 2 teenagers.听 The boys were put in jail after an attempted robbery in which they killed a white man out driving with his girlfriend.听听

James Cameron - who was 16 at the time - had left his friends at the crime scene before the killing took place.听 From his cell in the jailhouse he heard his friends having ropes placed around their necks but when his turn came - although he was hauled out of the jail - the crowds dissipated and he escaped being hung from a tree.

The expericence shaped his life and after serving his prison sentence he founded 3 NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) chapters in Indiana and served as the State Director of Civil Liberties which meant he was responsible for reporting on violations of the "equal accommodations" law.听 His family suffered intimidation and death threats and he moved to Milwaukee where in 1988 he opened "America's Black Holocaust Museum".

We hear an archive interview recorded for 'Everyman' when James Cameron was 80 and an interview with Bethany Criss from the museum.听

James Cameron was born February 25th 1915 in Wisconsin. He died on June 11th 2006 in Milwaukee.

Peter Kennedy
Folk music collector who has died aged 83.

Peter Kennedy devoted his life to recording traditional song and dance from around the country. Folk Music was in his blood - his father was Director of the English Folk Dance and Song Society and his mother had been founding secretary of the English Folk Dance Society in 1911. In 1952, using early electronic recording techniques, Peter Kennedy began collecting folk music and dialect for the 大象传媒.

Peter Kennedy collaberated with a variety of artists including the McPeake family, Ewan MacColl, Al Lloyd and even helped Brian Epstein obtain a set of Irish uillean pipes for John Lennon.

Folk singer Shirley Collins remembers recording her first LPs with Peter Kennedy and we talk to Marilyn Tucker and Paul Wilson from Wren - a Devon based music organisation.

Peter Douglas Kennedy was born on the November 18th听1922. He died on the June 10th听2006.

Monsignor Denis Faul
The Catholic clergyman who persuaded the hunger strikers to abandon their protest听has died aged 74.

Leading figures from across the political spectrum in Northern Ireland have been paying tribute to the听 devout Catholic priest who first made his name marching with the Civil Rights movement in 1968 campaigning for equality for Catholics.听 He was one of the first people to argue for the release of the Birmingham Six and the Guildford Four.

One of 7 children, he had studied for the priesthood at Maynooth and joined the staff at St Patrick's Academy for Boys at Dungannon.听 He was the author of several campaigning pamphlets compiled with Father Raymond Murray. Latterly he had argued against integration in schools, for more co-operation between Catholics and the new police force and he had called on the IRA to reveal where it had buried the bodies of the Disappeared.

The journalist and documentary maker Peter Taylor and Professor Paul Bew from Queens University assess his legacy.

Denis O Bairne Faul was born on August 14th 1932. He died on June 21st 2006.听

Alan Kotok
Computer pioneer who has died aged 64.

Alan Kotok was one of the first "computer hackers", a听term which today refers to digital outlaws gaining information without the owners permission. To Alan Kotok and his friends, however,听"hacking" described their passion for designing hardware and software without a constructive end in mind.

Alan Kotok helped develop amongst other things the first ever chess playing computer game, the first computer video听game 'Spacewars' and a timesharing computer - a forerunner to the world wide web.

Elwyn Berlekamp, Barry Silverman and Gordon Bell remember their friend and colleague.

Alan Kotok died on May 26th 2006.
