Matthew Bannister
Matthew Bannister tells the life stories of people who have died recently. This week:听Beryl Corner, Chris Lightfoot, The Mighty Terror, Sir Arthur Marshall and Freddy Francis.
Dr Beryl Corner
Paediatrician听who has died听aged 96.

Beryl Corner was a formidable woman who fought against male prejudice to pioneer paediatrics in Britain. She was born in Bristol and educated at the Redland High School for Girls where she won the form prize every year. She was also a prize winning student at the London School of Medicine for Women, qualifying in 1934. But in her early career she faced many barriers. Obstetricians saw no need for paediatricians like her, in fact it was a role that barely existed. And the men who controlled hospital appointments tried to block her from training posts and senior positions alike. But she found a base in Bristol where she became an unpaid physician to children鈥檚 outpatients whilst earning a living from teaching nurses and some private work.

Finally appointed a consultant paediatrician in 1942, Beryl Corner established one of the UK鈥檚 first special care baby units at Southmead Hospital which went on to gain an international reputation.

Matthew Bannister talks to her friend and colleague the former chairman of the British Medical Association Sir Alexander Macara.

Dr Beryl Corner听 was born December听 9th 1910. She died March 4th听2007.
Christopher Lightfoot
Programmer and online campaigner who has died aged 28.

Chris Lightfoot saw the internet as a powerful tool for encouraging greater participation in democracy and civic society. For the charity 鈥榤ySociety鈥 he developed websites which enabled voters to gain more direct access to their MPs, including 鈥榳ritetothem鈥, 鈥榟earfromyourmp鈥 and 鈥榩ledge bank鈥. He also helped to develop the 10 Downing Street e-petition site which recently attracted more than a million people to protest against road pricing.

Chris was born in London, took six grade As in his A levels at Westminster School and went on to read natural sciences at Cambridge University. Chris鈥檚 manic work rate concealed frequent bouts of depression and he was found dead at his home in aged just 28.

Matthew Bannister talks to his friend Julian Midgeley, fellow 鈥楴o 2 ID鈥 campaigner, Andrew Watson and Tom Steinberg the Director of 鈥榤ySociety鈥.

Christopher Lightfoot was born on August 4th 1978. He died on February 11th 2007.
The Mighty Terror (Fitzgerald Henry)
One of the last greats of Classic Calypso who has died aged 86.

In 1957 the Mighty Terror was named Calypso King of Great Britain at a high profile celebration of West Indian culture. The singer was born Fitzgerald Henry in Trinidad and developed his vocal talents at school and in church. He was already a well known exponent of classic calypso when he found work on a transatlantic ship to make the journey to England in 1953. The Mighty Terror joined fellow calypso king Lord Kitchener and other West Indian musicians to create a fashion for caribbean folk music in London and around the UK. Terror moved back to Trinidad in the 1960s and continued to perform until just before his death.

Matthew Bannister talks to the musician and producer Eddy Grant who was a friend and admirer of Terror鈥檚 music.

Fitzgerald Henry听 was born January 13th 1921.听He听died March 14th 2007.
Sir Arthur Marshall
Aerospace entrepreneur who has died aged 103.

Sir Arthur Marshall was born in 1903 鈥 just thirteen days before the Wright Brothers made the world鈥檚 first manned flight. His life spanned the history of aviation 鈥 from his purchase of a Gypsy Moth in 1929 to his work on the Space Shuttle Challenger in the 1980s.

After taking a first in engineering at Cambridge University, Arthur started work in the family business. Both men saw the potential of the developing aviation world and whilst Arthur combined work at the garage with giving flying lessons, his father bought a plot of land which was later developed into Cambridge airport. In 1941, Sir Arthur Marshall鈥檚 flying school training ideas were adopted across the RAF and in 1942 when his father died, Arthur became chairman of Marshalls of Cambridge.

During his 48 years in charge Sir Arthur built Marshall鈥檚 into one of the largest privately owned companies in the UK. He was an influential figure in Britain鈥檚 aviation world, supporting and leading many of the industry鈥檚 prestigious bodies. In 1960 Marshall鈥檚 was invited to design and build the complex "droop snoot" and retracting visor for Concorde and during the Falklands鈥 war they developed in just 19 days Hercules air-to-air refuelling.

Sir Arthur鈥檚 working hours were legendary and right up to his retirement in 1989, at the age of 86, he was working a seven-day, 65-hour week.

Matthew Bannister talks to his friend and colleague Terry Holloway.
Sir Arthur Marshall was born on December 4th 1903. He died on March 16th 2007.
Freddie Francis
Cinematographer who has died听aged 89.

Freddie Francis won two Oscars for his work as a cinematographer 鈥 one for Sons and Lovers in 1960 and the other for 鈥淕lory鈥 nearly thirty years later. Between the two parts of his career as a cinematographer, Freddie also built a cult following as a director of Hammer horror films. It was a genre he didn鈥檛 particularly enjoy, but much to his embarrassment, pictures like Dr Terror鈥檚 House of Horrors and The Psycopath made him better known than his more artistic work.

In the 1950s and 60s Freddie worked as cinematographer on a string of acclaimed British films, including 鈥淩oom at the Top鈥 and 鈥淪aturday Night, Sunday Morning鈥. In the 80s and 90s he was back in demand as David Lynch used his skill at shooting in black and white to evoke Victorian London in 鈥淭he Elephant Man鈥 and Martin Scorsese harnessed his instinctive grasp of gothic atmosphere for 鈥淐ape Fear.鈥

Matthew Bannister talks to the writer and broadcaster Matthew Sweet.

Freddie Francis听 was born December 22nd 1917. He died March 17th 2007.
