Norman Shumway
heart transplant pioneer who has died aged 83
The first heart transplant was performed by the South African doctor Christian Barnard but the techniques he used to cool the heart were developed by Norman Shumway in America. When other surgeons abandoned transplants because of the high fatality rates - Norman Shumway continued to investigate how to prevent the rejection of the new heart following surgery and gained success using a drug suggested to him by Professor Roy Calne.

Archbishop Paul Marcinkus who has died aged 84
Father Marcinkus - who was nicknamed 'The Gorilla' was ordained as a bishop in 1969 and acted as a bodyguard to Pope John Paul II, preventing a knife attack on the Pope in 1970. He presided over the Vatican Bank for 18 years and was charged but not convicted when Italy's largest private bank Banco Ambrosiano went bankrupt in 1982. The head, Roberto Calvi, was found hanging under Blackfriars Bridge in London shortly after this collapse.
As a young priest in the 50s he studied in London. His landlord George Crawford recalls this period. John Cornwell, author of A Thief in the Night, discusses his Vatican career.听
