Matthew Bannister
Matthew Bannister听tells the life stories of people who have died recently: Bill Frindall, John Updike, John Martyn, Reg Gutteridge and Angela Morley.
Bill Frindall
Cricket Scorer who has died aged 69

Dubbed `The Bearded Wonder' by the late Brian Johnston, Bill Frindall, the 大象传媒's scorer and statistician, was the longest serving member of Radio's Test Match Special commentary team. Since making his debut in 1966, he scored 377 Test matches, including all 246 played in England.

He created his own linear scoring system, based on a method invented by John Pendlington and first used in 1893.

Bill Frindall was born 3 March 1939 and died 30 January 2009.

John Updike
Pulitzer Prize winning American novelist who has died aged 76

Philip Roth described John Updike as a 鈥渘ational treasure鈥 and his death as 鈥渁 loss to our literature that is immeasurable鈥. Martin Amis said he was possessed of a purer energy than any writer since DH Lawrence. Twice a winner of the Pulitzer Prize, John Updike was a prolific writer of poetry, literary criticism, memoir and novels, including the 鈥淩abbit鈥 novels, in which he chronicled the life and loves of his generation.

John Martyn
Musician who has died aged 60

John Martyn was one of the most innovative singer-songwriters of his generation. Although he rarely made the charts, many of his albums are regarded as classics. In particular 鈥淪olid Air鈥, recorded in 1973 and seen as his masterpiece.

John was born Ian David McGeachy. His parents divorced when he was five and he spent his childhood between his mother鈥檚 houseboat in England and his father鈥檚 home in Scotland. John moved to London in his late teens and started playing on the folk scene, where he met the singer Ralph McTell.
In 2008 John Martyn was honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the Radio 2 Folk Awards. The presentation was made by the drummer and singer Phil Collins.

John Martyn was born 11 September 1948 and died January 29 2009.

Reg Gutteridge
Boxing commentator who has died aged 84

Reg Gutteridge came from a boxing family in Islington, North London. His grandfather had been a professional boxer and his father and uncle 鈥 twin brothers 鈥 were both trainers. Reg was a talented amateur flyweight until he was called up for war service in the army. He lost his right leg when he stepped on a mine in action after the D Day landings. After the war Reg became boxing correspondent of the London Evening News, and in 1965 he was recruited to ITV鈥檚 World of Sport programme. For the next thirty years, Reg was ringside at all the major fights around the world.

Angela Morley
Composer who has died aged 84

Angela Morley was a celebrated composer and arranger, producing scores for many films and TV shows and working with singers like Scott Walker, Dusty Springfield and Mel Torme.
Angela started life as Wally Stott, but had a sex change operation in middle age.

Musical director on the Goon Show and composer of the theme tune for Hancock鈥檚 Half Hour, Angela Morley was twice nominated for Oscars for her film work and made her home in Hollywood. There she worked mainly in television, writing music for series like Dallas and Dynasty.
