Caspar Weinberger American Defence Secretary who has died aged 88.
Caspar Weinberger was one of America's longest serving Defence Secretaries, holding the post between 1981 and 1987. Under Ronald Reagan he was responsible for a massive increase in US defence spending. He was given an honary kinighthood for his support of Britian during the Falklands conflict and was embroiled听in the Iran/Contra enquiry.
Lord Carrington who was Margaret Thatcher's Foreign Secretary when the Falkland Islands were invaded by Argentina and听Washington Correspondent for the Independent newspaper, Rupert Cornwell, evaluate Caspar Weinberger's political career along with tributes from听the current American Defence Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, and Republican Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska.
Caspar Weinberger was born on 18th August 1917.听He died on 28th March 2006.

John Hayes Director of the National Portrait Gallery for 20 years has died.
John Hayes presided over the expansion of the听National Portrait Gallery from 1974 to 1994. It was under his directorship that听portraits were听commissioned for the gallery for the first time.
Sir Roy Strong, John Hayes's predecessor at the National Portrait Gallery, pays tribute to his friend听during his memorial service last week.
John Hayes was born on the 21st January 1929. He died on the 25th December 2005. |

Bernard Lacoste Who turned the family sportswear business into a global designer label has died aged 74.
In 1926, the French tennis player Rene Lacoste who was fed up of playing in cumbersome long sleeved shirts, took the radical step of designing a short sleeved tennis shirt. Inspired听by his crocodile skin suitcase he听adorned听his shirt听with听a crocodile logo. His son Bernard Lacoste turned this into a global designer label.
Bernard Lacoste was born on the 22nd June 1931. He died on the 21st March 2006. |

Peter Terry Last member of the family from York to work听for the famous chocolate firm has died aged 87.
The Terry chocolate company was founded in York in 1826.听Peter Terry kept his involvement with the firm until he died despite Terry's being taken over five times.

William Russell One half of the Russell Hobbs partnership who has died aged 85.
The Russell and Hobbs K1 kettle was the first to combine sleek design with the ability to automatically switch off before boiling over. The kettle was designed by William Russell and he went into partnership with engineer Peter Hobbs in 1952.
Peter Hobbs tells us how they produced the perfect ceramic coffee percolator.

Stanislaw Lem Science fiction author who has died aged 84.
听
Stanislaw Lem used science fiction to publish thinly disguised criticisms of the Soviet-backed government in his native Poland. He was best known for his novel "Solaris" which was twice made into a film. Mark Straker reads us a short听extract. |
