CHILD SOLDIERS and RE-SOCIALISATION
It is estimated that 300, 000 child soldiers are being used in over thirty conflicts worldwide in countries such as Africa, Latin America, Cambodia and Asia's Tibet, Afghanistan and Iraq.
听
The majority of these boys and girls come from extreme poverty or an already existing war torn situation where their families have been lost due to disease or violence. For those who are rescued or who manage to escape, the psychological effect on their lives is profound with a high level of post traumatic stress disorder.
听 Raj Persaud talks to Mr Olara Otunnu, the United Nations special representative for children and armed conflict and hears the experience of Napoleon Adok. At the age of eleven, Napoleon fled Sudan and headed to a refugee camp in Ethiopia only to find out that the camp was run by rebels who trained young children into hardened soldiers. Now thirty two years old, Napoleon is devoting his life to helping ex-child soldiers readjust to being civilians.
听 Neil Boothby, Professor of child psychology at Columbia University discusses the impact of war on the political development of children.
听 APHASIA
Aphasia is an acquired communication disorder that impairs a person's ability to process language, both in the ability to speak and understand others.
听
Stroke is the most common cause of aphasia but it can also result from head injury, brain tumour or other neurological causes. Alan Hewitt explains how he has been fully rehabilitated back into the work place and he is now the Head of Development at Connect a charity which looks after people with communication disability.
听 Raj Persaud speaks to Dr Susan Edwards, Professor of Clinical Linguistics at the Communications Disorder Centre, Reading University and the author of a new book Fluent Aphasia.
