'Costing the Earth confronts accepted views on the environment. I think the programme consistently manages to get the real story and tell it in a way that makes people care.'

For urban regeneration- just add sport? |
Going for Green!
The organisers of the London 2012 Olympics promise that it will be one of the 'greenest' Games ever. But what do they mean by that? Can the concrete-ing over of a vast swathe of East London for a few weeks of sporting festivities ever be considered environmentally friendly? In 'Costing the Earth' Miriam O'Reilly puts the promises to the test.
A guided tour around what will become the main stadium site at Stratford shows a surface of car breaking yards, taxi-repairers, brothels and some of the largest and angriest dogs in Greater London.
But explore a little further, say the locals, and you'll find a parallel world of canals lined with willows, painted by the wings of kingfishers, alive with the cries of coots. Can a way be found to preserve the pockets of loveliness as the Olympics bulldozes the armpit of East London?听
Even more听importantly, what becomes of East London when the last shot-putter has packed away his balls?
'Costing the Earth' takes a high-speed tour around previous Olympic cities in search of answers and lessons. Barcelona remade itself into one of the world's great cities, Athens forgot most of its environmental promises as it rushed to finish the stadia, Sydney claimed to be 'green' but left a legacy of under-used concrete.
The Olympics are coming to London, millions of pounds are up for grabs.
'Costing the Earth' finds out how we can make best use听of it for London 's environment.
