GREEN ON GREEN?
Under the government’s proposed renewable energy strategy it’s clear we’re going to need to come up with some pretty ‘big fixes’ over the next few years. Yet sometimes it seems that every large project is thwarted, either by a creaking planning system or by a powerful environmental lobby fighting developments such as the rejected Lewis windfarm and the proposed Severn Barrage on behalf of birds, bees or fish. So how do we accommodate all the new energy infrastructure we’re going to need in a small country where countryside and environment are held dear?
As the energy minister Malcolm Wicks put it – are some environmentalists with ‘good hearts but confused minds almost a barrier to tackling climate change?’
This week Costing the Earth asks if a new breed of green energy environmentalists are challenging the traditional wildlife conservationists. Are the old guard of green Britain holding back big renewable energy projects and are they at odds with the green goals and aspirations of government?
