This week's topics:
Living close to waste transfer stations
Question: I live in a residential area where a waste transfer station has been allowed to operate. It's only a couple of doors down from where I live and container lorries that come right up to my bedroom window regularly trundle past my house. The noise and dirt is dreadful. How can they be allowed to operate here? How do I find out what the guidelines are and why do we need these places?
Shooting song birds
Question: I walk a lot here in the valleys and I haven't seen many blue tits this year. Has their decline got anything to do with countries like Italy, Spain and France shooting and trapping them?
Food Miles
Question: Food Miles is the term used to describe the movement of food around the world. To me there seems to be few questions asked about where our food comes from and the transportation of food from not only inside our country but from all corners around the world. A perfect example of this is Malawi sells its corn reserves to Kenya, Kenya sells frozen veg and exotic fruit to the UK and the UK sends famine relief to Malawi. What is the environmental impact of all this and how do we know whether or not the produce is produced to the same standards as our farmers keep to?
