Panel This week's guests: from the Institute of Astronomy at the University of Cambridge. Head of Science and Policy for the British Geological Survey in Europe from the School of Oriental and African Studies University of London TOPICS Sichuan Earthquake Following the devastating earthquake in China in May 2008, a listener contacted Home Planet to say that she was puzzled by the number of earthquakes in this part of the world because it appears to be in the middle of a tectonic plate and not on the edge of one. Nick Riley explained that parts of China are very susceptible to seismological events because of the lateral stresses exerted by the Great India plate hitting the Eurasian plate. The former is travelling northwards at about 5cms per year and continues to push the Himalayas higher. Useful links For a detailed analysis see the Heat in the atmosphere Why is it that the closer we get to the sun the hotter it gets, but the higher we go on earth (even in full view of the sun) the cooler it is? The answer is simple - but the science less so! Earth's atmospheric pressure promotes adiabatic cooling whereas, in the vacuum of space, heat behaves as we would imagine it would through solar radiation (i.e. the closer you are to the source of the heat - the hotter it is).
