PROGRAMME INFO
Thursday 21:00-21:30
Leading Edge brings you the latest news from the world of science. Geoff Watts celebrates discoveries as soon as they're being talked about - on the internet, in coffee rooms and bars; often before they're published in journals. And he gets to grips with not just the science, but with the controversies and conversation that surround it.

Mitochondria

Mitochondrial DNA听

Mitochondrial DNA has recently been linked to a range of illnesses from chronic brain disease in children to high blood pressure later in life.

Now scientists at Newcastle University hope that implanting the nucleus of an embryo with defective mitochondria, into an egg from another woman could stop these diseases from being听inherited.听听

Syndrome X

Syndrome X affects up to one quarter of the Western populations. Symptoms include high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes.

New research suggests it's not necessarily just a lifestyle problem, mitochondrial DNA are responsible.听

Radioactive waste

As British companies compete for contracts to dispose of radioactive waste, we review the options for storage. Is it best kept in cement or glass?听

Consumer friendly GM

The latest GM technology from New Zealand uses genes from within the same species to modify crops.

Could this satisfy consumer concern about the ethics of transferring genes between very different species of animals and plants?
