PROGRAMME INFO
Thursday 21:00-21:30
Leading Edge brings you the latest news from the world of science. Geoff Watts celebrates discoveries as soon as they're being talked about - on the internet, in coffee rooms and bars; often before they're published in journals. And he gets to grips with not just the science, but with the controversies and conversation that surround it.

This week on Leading Edge ...

Ancient Egyptian Glassworks

Geoff Watts visits Dr Thilo Rehren at University College London to hear about exciting new findings that reveal the first known site of an Egyptian glass factory.

Although Mesopotamia has long been thought to be the region where people first made glass, this new evidence suggests that Egyptians were also actively producing this product.

The exchange of glass between regions most likely played an important role in the political changes of the Near and Middle East during the late Bronze Age.

Energy Efficient Porters in Nepal.

A new study from researchers in Belgium has revealed just how energy efficient the sherpas of Nepal are when carrying their huge loads.

Sherpas can carry up to 150% of their bodyweight and hardly use any extra energy to so.听 How they manage it is still a mystery, but it could be due to their high-carb diet.

House-building Robot

Molly Bentley reports from Los Angeles on a new robot that has been designed to build a house, from start to finish, in just 24 hours.

Noisy, dusty building construction could be a thing of the past with this new robot, which can even add windows, and paint the inside.

Art and the cosmos

Geoff visits a new art installation at the University of Oxford that also acts as a fully functioning radio telescope.
