A Life With Pink Pigeons
Grant Sonnex听tracks down conservationist Carl Jones who left Wales Twenty-six years ago for Mauritius - once home to the infamous Dodo.
Carl's aim was to stop the unique Mauritian kestrel sharing the Dodo's fate. There were only two pairs in the wild when he started.听 Now there are 800 on the island.
He听climbed trees and removed the Kestrels' eggs to incubate and raise in captivity.. a risky business, but it worked.
After Kestrels came the curious relative of the dodo, the pink pigeon.听 Carl's work with the birds has given him an extraordinary feel for the island's wildlife.
It听is also a source of his passion to see the wildlife restored as close as possible to its former glory before humans arrived on the island some 400 years ago.
Amongst the Islands's ebony forests and giant tortoises,听Carl tells Grant what his life on Mauritius taught him, and talks about his forthright and unusually optimistic views on conservation worldwide.
The last programme in the series is...
A Life With Wolves Monday 2nd May 2005, 9pm-9.30pm
Grant meets Shaun Ellis - a man in Wolf's clothing who teaches wolf pups how to hunt...
