The Oak Tree Planters

In the Living World,听 Brett Westwood heads for the oak trees to watch the bird nicknamed the "colourful crow".

With its pinky-brown plumage, bright blue wing patches and screeching call, the jay, when spotted, is unmistakable. But it is not always that easy to see. Naturally shy, it prefers not to draw attention to itself, unlike some of its corvid cousins such as the noisy rook or the chattering magpie.

In the autumn however, the jay is busy finding and burying the acorns that will feed it throughout the winter. They have excellent memories and will return to most of the acorns they bury - but not all - making them a key species when it comes to the rejuvenation of Britain's forests.听

Brett Westwood 听reveals the life of the oak tree planter in the Living World.听
