The Living World - Dragonflies

Just how fast can a dragonfly fly? -- not the first line of a tongue twister but one of the questions that Lionel Kelleway asks Ruary McKenzie Dodds, chairman of the Dragonfly Project in this edition of the Living World.

It turns out that there are rumours of dragonflies overtaking Cesna light aeroplanes in flight. But in the league table of jawdropping facts even that pales into insignificance next to the details of the lives of these extraordinary animals which spend as much as seven years under water before emerging to become one of the natural world's record-breaking flyers.
