On the 350th Anniversary of the publication of The Compleat Angler, passionate fly fisherman, Geoffrey Palmer, presents a 5-part series celebrating the life and work of Izaak Walton, the River Dove and the art of Angling.
| | | | | Fly Fishing on the River Dove in Dovedale | Programme 5: Chub Sunday 24 August, 2.45-3.00pm
Even as far back as 350 years when Izaak Walton fished in the River Dove, this river has been famous for its chub. Angler Graham Marsden whose first experiences of catching fish were with a bent pin and a rod in a canal, describes the relationship between the hunter and his prey on the banksides of the River Dove, in the shadow of the pioneer of all fishermen, Izaak Walton.
The programme also includes extracts from The Compleat Angler, which described the habits and life history of chub and also advice from Izaak Walton how to fish for this fearfullest of fish.
The series concludes with some reflections from Graham and fellow angler, and Izaak Walton historian, Tony Bridgett, on the importance of angling to these men. As for Izaak Walton angling is much more than just a past time, it is a way of life, and an essential part of their lives and as one listens to them talk about angling, you can鈥檛 help but feel, that for them, life without the angle without fishing, simply wouldn鈥檛 be worth living.
