Kimbea and her calf's challenging migration across the plains of Africa
Monday to Friday 3.45-4.00pm 3 - 7 November, 2003

A dramatic and evocative recreation of one of the greatest migration stories of them all; the epic journey of a female wildebeest and her calf from the Serengeti Plains of East Africa to the Masai Mara and back again, in one of the greatest mass movements of animals on the planet.

wildebeest and calf
Female wildebeest and her young calf

Narrated by Adjoa Andoh, this 5-part series broadcast across one week, tells a dramatic story of survival, as more than one and half million animals pursue the rains in an endless search for food and water over almost 2000 miles. Each programme follows a different leg of this challenging journey, combining a rich soundscape (with sounds recorded on location by Chris Watson and Owen Newman), with a powerful narration to produce a thrilling and evocative series.

At 4 years old, Kimbea (a Swahili name meaning Run) is still a young adult, but this is her fifth annual migration and she is prepared for what lies ahead. She must avoid lions, cheetahs and hyenas, survive a treacherous river crossing, escape grass fires on the parched plains, protect her calf (born at the start of the journey) from predation, and survive the threats of starvation and dehydration during the long months of migration.

The backdrop to the series is the soundscape: a journey in sound from the haunting cries of hyena on the open savannah to the loud, rude laughter of wallowing hippos in Lake Victoria from the blood-bath of crocodile-infested rivers to the terrifying crackle of flames on the dry plains, and throughout, the Africa rhythm of over a million hooves, the grunts of wildebeest and the brays and snorts of zebra.

Together, the evocative soundtrack and the dramatic narration make for a very exciting and unique audio journey.
