A solar sail in space
COSMOS 1 - a solar sail

Solar sails

What has happened to COSMOS 1, the ambitious new spacecraft launched on Tuesday evening?

The plan was that this solar sail, which looks like a giant windmill the size of a tennis court, would be pushed by particles of light.

Can the mission be rescued and what does this mean for future hopes of sailing to the stars?

Quentin Cooper talks to Andy Lound from the Planetary Society and Peter Bond of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Bioactive glass

Glass; well known as the fragile stuff from window panes.

Less well known are the medical roles it can play within our bodies.

A growing number of people are walking around with glass implants in their bodies. Dr Robert Hill, from Imperial College and Prof Paul Hutton from Sheffield University talk to Quentin about how this seemingly unsuitable material can mend bones and re-grow cartilage.
