Are the potential benefits of Gene Therapy worth the risk?
Are the potential benefits of Gene Therapy worth the risk?

Explore The Material World with the In December, 大象传媒 Radio 4's weekly science programme The Material World is broadcasting a series of audience debates. The series is a co-production with the Open University and is designed to support the OU's Science in Context course, S250.

The potential for human stem cells to specialise and form different types of tissue raises the possibility of major advances in healthcare.

Much of the current research is controversial because it involves deriving stem cells from human embryos.

One of the applications of stem cells is gene therapy, a technique for correcting defective genes responsible for disease development and diseases.

But again there are important questions raised by these: Are disabilities diseases? Do they need to be cured or prevented? How much will it cost? Who will have access to these therapies? How safe are these therapies?

Joining presenter Quentin Cooper at the Centre for Life in Newcastle, to discuss these issues are Professor of regenerative medicine, Colin McGuckin, Medical Director of the Institute of Human Genetics, Professor John Burn, Dr. Tom Wakeford, Director of Co enquiry PEALS (Policy and Ethics in the Life Sciences) and Director of the Life Science Centre Linda Conlon.
