INTERDEPENDENCE DAY
SPECIAL EDITION

'Making new maps for an island planet' is the motto of a new initiative encouraging interdependence between science and the arts. The听 project has been set up by the Open University and the Economic and Social Research Council to refresh debate on the big issues facing today's planet.

Sustainable development, globalisation, environmental change, all phrases we're used to hearing but not doing much about; the debate has stagnated. Now this project aims to inject some life into these fundamental issues. How are we to save the planet from environmental disaster?听

Starting听on 1st July
(Interdependence Day),听the project hopes to kick-start a grand rethink and knock down some of the jargon that litters the debate.

In a special edition of Material World, from the Royal Geographical Society, Quentin Cooper is joined by scientists and researchers to find out how the world might be saved in sixty minutes.

The guests are Doreen Massey, Professor of Geography at the Open University; Professor Martin Parry of the University of East Anglia and Chairman of Working Group II, an offshoot of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; Sir Mark Moody-Stuart, chairman of Anglo American plc, ex-chairman of Royal Dutch Shell and member of the UN Secretary General's Advisory Council for the Global Compact; and Bill Thompson, technology commentator, writer and broadcaster.
