"For me science isn't a subject, it's a perspective. There are fascinating scientific aspects to everything from ancient history to the latest gadgets, outer space to interior decorating; and each week on The Material World we try to reflect the excitement, ideas, uncertainties, collisions and collaborations as science continues its never-ending voyage into the unknown".

During August Material World is broadcasting three programmes made in conjunction with the Open University.听 For more information about science at the Open University, click .
In the second of these special programmes Material World heads to Falmer in Sussex - home of Sussex University.听 In a programme dedicated to the nature of experimentation, Quentin Cooper asks is it really necessary for a scientific education?听 According to Erasmus Darwin's definition ' A fool ... is a man who never tried an experiment in his life.' At Sussex there appears to be some such fools, students who are conducting scientific experiments for the very first time.
The key objective of the Open University Practicing Science Summer School is to introduce those on it to experimentation and the scientific method.听 Joining Quentin Cooper are Stephen Webster, lecturer in science communication at Imperial College London; Audrey Brown, one of the Open University group tutors supporting students as they get to grips with听working in a laboratory; and George Kemenes, Professor of Neuroscience at Sussex University who specialises in snail experiments that lead to a greater understanding of human neuronal activity.
