"For me science isn't a subject, it's a perspective. There are fascinating scientific aspects to everything from ancient history to the latest gadgets, outer space to interior decorating; and each week on The Material World we try to reflect the excitement, ideas, uncertainties, collisions and collaborations as science continues its never-ending voyage into the unknown".

Science vs the rest of the world
In a special programme recorded at this year's Hay festival, Quentin Cooper asks three leading scientific thinkers what happens when the frontiers of science come up against the realms of politics,听religion and public opinion.
Science is always pushing into disputed territory, such as the recent Parliamentary debates over human-animal embryos or the ongoing arguments over climate change.听 But when the different states of mind meet, where does the line get drawn?
Is it the case that, when scientists propose unexpected or unwanted theories, they're dismissed as being unable to see the broader picture?
Or, after disagreements and delays, does science eventually just march on restricted only by what is possible?
To discuss these issues are Steve Jones, Professor of Genetics at University College London, science writer Philip Ball and the Government's former Chief Scientific Advisor, Professor Sir David King.
Books by this week's guests:
The Hot Topic: How to Tackle Global Warming and Still Keep the Lights On by Gabrielle Walker and David King, published by Bloomsbury
Universe of Stone: Chartere Cathedral and the Triumph of the Medieval Mind by Philip Ball, published by Bodley Head
The Sun and Moon Corrupted by Philip Ball, published by Portobello
Coral: a Pessimist in Paradise by Steve Jones, published by Little, Brown
Next week: Extremely Large Telescopes...
