Weblog: By Preeti

Preeti听is the youngest听member of our Reading Citizen Jury and is writing a blog for us whilst the jury meet and discuss the different issues with regards to "respect".

Wednesday 5th October 2005

The Jury is nearly coming to an end (but I don't know that for sure yet) and every meeting has been interesting and useful to me in every single way.

It's been nice hearing other people's thoughts, views and understanding the ways of how they do the same things we do but just in a different way.

The main focus and interest for the jury was about *RESPECT * but it all comes down to what听I wrote in my fist blog spot what is respect.听

YOUTHS

One of the things I feel strongly about is the way that some youths in the community are being treated and the way they are be treating with disrespect all because they are classed as ''thugs'' or 'gangsters'.

People these days are judgemental and personally I think that is very wrong and also very disrespectful it also shows just how rude and un understanding you are.

Some adults complain that the youths are out on the streets and assume that just because they are out that they're going to be causing problems and more trouble and they want more youth centres or more activities for the youths so they would be off the streets but that's like us youths saying why are adults out in the pub drinking and smoking away after work when they could be doing something else like activities??

I mean yeah I agree that there can be problems with youths on the streets but most of the times youths hang out on the streets because that's the only time they do get to go out and they just want to spend it with a non free activity.

The streets are just a place where youths (not only them can socialise and just catch up on anything they missed out on, it's all a place where they can express their thoughts and get their ideas across the community about anything they feel strongly about.

Why can't adults understand that youths don't always wanna be doing activities or going to youth centres they just wanna chill out on the streets and get given the respect they deserve because after all they are someone's child and youths are human beings just like the rest of people but just because they hang out in the streets and have all the designer label clothes all hooded up standing in the corner doesn't mean that there are going to be up to no good.

Why do people, even police, like to class youths with words like thugs or gangsters???
That's just another way of judging someone else: this also shows disrespect.
No one can help the way they dress or look it's just a given gift from God and they're just showing it.

Most people think that it's the youths that cause听trouble and problems these days, but some don't understand that it's not just us youths who cause them. Some youths are pressured into doing things that they don't really want to do but they still do it.听 It's a whole different culture and life style.

But at times some youths are pushed听to their limits from adults in society, because some adults do tend to swear and be all up in the youths face and DISRESPECT them because of certain things about them, like how they dress and the way they talk or even because of the people they hang around with.

Respect and Disrespect what's the difference?

A LOT

I don't see why some adults have to be all up in some youths face just because they THINK that the youths are going to cause trouble.

It's just DIS-RESPECTFUL.

The Jury isn't on today because the meetings are only held on Mondays and Tuesdays.
I'm looking forward to going to the jury meetings to see what kind of witness there's going to be.

Wednesday 14th听September 2005

Being the youngest person at the Jury and discussing issues that are happening around South Reading I've had a great time. For the past few days I've experienced something really new, interesting and very helpful.
It all started last Sunday, it was my first time going and the people that I've met I didn't really know at all.
We discussed main problems and issues that are concerning people in south Reading and chose few main topics that everyone will be looking into, to see if we can make a change in Reading.

At the moment it is unknown if we are going to make a change or not but whatever happens the experience I'm having in the Jury will always last with me.

On Monday we had a witness, his name was Darren. He works with a youth community up in South East London and works with all types of different youths that have had problems which need sorting out. He shared with everyone about his life and his deep experience that he faced when he was young and how it affected him. What he had to say really connected and related with South Reading , about drugs, violence, anti-social behaviour etc. After his talk Darren went outside for half an hour while the Jury people spilt up into groups and shared their thoughts, views and what they thought about Darren's story. We thought of lots of questions that we could ask him, in order to help us to make changes into South Reading and also to understand more about the Youth Culture.

The main focus in this jury is ''Respect''
What is it?
How do we show it?
How can we get it?
Is there enough of it?

Loads of questions pops into peoples mind when the word ''Respect'' comes up.
So what is respect really, I mean what's it all about and also why is there not enough of this in our community?

What you put in life is what you get back (most of the time) and it's sort of the same when it comes to Respect.

It's hard to believe when some people's lives are killed, all because that there is lack of respect.
Just because you don't like someone doesn't mean that you have the right not respect them at all. Respect is a powerful thing. You have to give it in order to receive it, I mean how can you expect to get respect back and be treated well from someone who you don't like and you don't show respect to them?

Just take the time to think about the word respect and what you think of it.

When you don't respect people you usually end up judging them which can lead to things like bullying, and also racism.

Just because you see some teenage youths wearing their hoodies doesn't mean that they are going to attack you or abuse you in any way. The way a person dresses, talks and looks can be misunderstood. Not all teenagers who wear hoodies and hang out on the streets are violent or nasty.

I should know because I have many friends who hang out on the streets with their label designer clothes, with there hoods up.They aren't violent or all up in your face just because you look at them. If you give them dirty looks and curse at them for no reason then you'll get back the same thing.

What I'm trying to say is at the end of the day its all about ''RESPECT''

If you respect others they are more likely to respect you back and not treat you like you're nothing. Even if you don't know them you should still treat them with respect. A little smile won't hurt anyone. It can make A LOT of difference.

IT'S ALL ABOUT RESPECT.
