Who should be on the White Cliffs

Ferry passengers travelling from Boulogne to Dover this Easter weekend could be in for a shock.

Instead of their first sight of Britain being the famous white cliffs of Dover - if they're travelling after sunset - what they'll see is a hundred foot high abstract art projection created by Dover body painter Joanna Jones.

She's got permission - and a grant - to turn Shakespeare's Cliff at Samphire Hoe into a giant canvas for one of her body paintings.

Dame Vera Lynn, famous for her renditions of the song the "White Cliffs of Dover" is not enthusiatic about the project.

"I don't really think the white cliffs of Dover should be used for this sort of thing. It's a symbol for so many people and surely there must be other ways for her to publicise her works."

Dame Vera adds, "I don't see how it can be publicity for Britain - it might be publicity for the artist. People coming to Britain especially for the first time, expect to see the white cliffs of Dover, they don't expect to see an art display do they!"
