James Naughtie US Campaign Diary 2002

By James Naughtie
Today presenter James Naughtie is in the USA following George W Bush on the US Mid-Term election campaign trail.

Monday - November 4
Florida.

"If you are looking for a centre of gravity in the mid-term elections here, Florida is irresistible. The President鈥檚 brother, Jeb, is running for re-election as Governor ... and it's being taken by both Democrats and Republicans - rightly or wrongly - as some thing of a referendum on the Bush presidency two years in."

Tuesday - November 5.
Georgia.

"Watching him on the road has been instructive. Iraq may yet undermine him - and who can say what difficulties are round the next corner in the 'war against terrorism' - but for the moment this is a President whose authority is growing."

Wednesday - November 6.
Victory for Bush.

"I've watched many elections in the United States, and this has been one of the most fascinating, allowing a President to grow - it seemed almost a physical change - in the course of the campaign."
