Islam Poll

The opinion poll among British muslims carried out for Today suggests stark differences between their attitudes and those of the rest of the population.
A big majority - 70% - do not believe the assertion - made repeatedly by President Bush and Tony Blair that the war on terrorism is not a war on Islam.. Futhermore most British muslims do not think the involvement of Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda in the New York and Bali attacks has been proved.
A small minority - 11% - of respondents said they thought a further attack on the US by Al Qaeda would be justified: 8% even felt an attack by Al Qaeda on Britain would be justified.
But the survey also suggests that most British muslims feel patriotic towards Britain; though the figure at 67% is lower than that for the general population (80%).
That could be partly explained, the pollsters ICM say, by the fact that the British muslim population is on average younger than the general population and patriotism tends to rise with age.
