Large swathes of offices on Capitol Hill were evacuated, after at least 30 people tested positive for exposure to anthrax.
Within one day the astounding became mundane. Hundreds of senate workers lined up through the day to have their nostrils swabbed in Russell building room number 325.
Early in the morning, the speaker of the House of Representatives, Dennis Hastert, had rushed down the steps of Capitol Hill to announce that he was having the House evacuated until next Tuesday. In contrast to his wide caution, every senator I spoke to sounded sceptical.
The investigating authorities - as far as we know - still don't have many clues as to the source of the anthrax, or the next likely target. Bob Graham, chair of the senate intelligence committee, says his latest information on the who, what and where remained very sketchy.
The mood on Capitol Hill is frustrated rather than fearful.
It is perhaps the lesson learnt a long time ago in places like Britain. Terrorism can be terrifying for some. But to many others it can be tiresome and inconvenient.
