Autumn Survey 2001
by Tom Feilden
Almost every day it seems we're bombarded with warnings about the dire consequences of global warming. One moment we're about to be deluged in a flood, the next baking in a Mediterranean summer. It may get colder if the gulf stream switches off, or then again it may get warmer as greenhouse gases build up in the atmosphere. Sea levels may rise, but no one is sure by how much.

Confused? Well here's your chance to get to grips with the hard and fast facts of climate change - helping us to help scientists at the Woodland Trust and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology measure the changing pattern of the seasons.

Thousands of you took part in the largest survey of its kind last spring. It showed that Snowdrops were appearing 3 weeks earlier than they were fifty years ago. The first spring sighting of a Sand Martin occurred 2 weeks earlier than in 1950.

Now we want your help documenting the changing face of autumn. The experts think its getting later and shorter. But when are the leaves falling on the trees near you? Is the grass on your lawn still growing? Have the fieldfares and redwings already arrived?

Just to register as a recorder and enter your observations online. You will also find information on what to look out for at
