Reading and Dreaming
One of the largest studies into dreams has shown that people's taste in books indicates the kind of dreams they have. The finding adds more weight to the view that different personality types have different kinds of dreams. This report by our science correspondent, Pallab Ghosh:

The big argument among dream scientists is whether dreams are related to a persons experiences in the waking world - or just delirious nonsense.

To help settle this researchers in Swansea asked more than 10,000 library-goers to fill out questionnaires about their book preferences and the kinds of dreams they have.

To their amazement the researchers found that the two were related: readers of fiction have more bizarre dreams, those who read fantasy books are more likely to have nightmares, and those who read romance novels have emotionally intense dreams.

The choice of book is an indication of personality - so the results indicate that what you dream is related to the kind of person you are. And worringly for parents, the research also suggests that children who read scary books are three times more likely to have nightmares than those who don't.
