Foot and Mouth Outbreak -
WEEK 11
Some Facts
  • The worst outbreak so far was in 1967 when 400,000 animals were slaughtered.
  • In 1981 a single case occurred on the Isle of Wight.
  • Since 1982 Britain has been classified as free of the disease.
  • The total number of confirmed cases in the UK has reached 1.928 cases.
    3,656,000 animals have been slaughtered.
    38,000 awaiting slaughter
    21,000 awaiting disposal

Day 73 - May 4
The English Tourism Council warned that as many as 250,000 jobs in the industry were at risk because of the effects of Foot and Mouth. Meanwhile the Agriculture minister, Nick Brown, told Today that it was right to say the epidemic was under control, although the government wanted to see the culling programme through to its conclusion

Day 72 - May 3
Tony Blair said the fight against foot and mouth disease was coming 'under control'. The Prime Minister said the backlog of slaughtered animals was being reduced, while the number of new cases had been in single figures every day this week. Speaking in Downing Street he said tackling the virus could still be a 'long haul'. And he insisted the Government would not drop its guard.

Day 71 - May 2
Five sheep have been barracaded in the living room of Ms Carolyn Hoffe. Following the plight of Porky Pig and Phoenix the Calf, Ms Hoffe hopes that her family sheep Maggie, Matthew, Melissa, Emily and Eva can also be saved from culling. The sheep are Dutch Zwartbles which are a rare breed. Ms Hoffe's house falls within the 3km culling ring around infected foot and mouth areas. However she claims her sheep are all fit and healthy. Officials from the Scottish Executive have been round to remove the sheep, but weren't able to enter the house. Mrs Hoffe has since lodged an appeal and hopes her sheeps can be saved.

Day 70 - May 1
Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture say they want to bury more carcasses at a foot and mouth disposal site in Northumberland, despite public health concerns. Operations were suspended two days ago at the former open cast mine at Widdrington when residents saw fluid pouring from a lorry carrying slaughtered animals.
