Day 80 - May 11
The Ministry of Agriculture said that almost a third of all cases of foot and mouth, confirmed by government vets in thefield, proved to be negative in subsequent laboratory tests. The
admission raised the possibility that many animals may have been slaughtered needlessly. But the ministry insisted that a rapid culling policy was necessary to curb the spread of the virus.
Day 78 - May 9
Representatives from rural tourism and other businesses which have been affected by the foot and mouth crisis are heading to London to protest against the Government's compensation packages.
Members of the Cumbria Crisis Alliance, Living Exmoor and Powys Rural Business Campaign are demanding more aid than they have so far been offered. One of the protestors -- a hotelier from Cumbria, Terry Franks, said that they felt as if they were being ignored by the Environment Minister.
Day 77 - May 8 With a June 7 General Election expected to be announced, debate on this day moved to whether or not the problems that worked against a May poll have really passed.
Agriculture Minister Nick Brown highlighted the need for the farming community to remain vigilant, as some tourism operators voiced their opposition to the election being called.
