Day 14, 6th March 2001
Debate rages about whether a widespread vaccination campaign across the continent would stem the spread of foot and mouth. As European vets prepare to meet to discuss the crisis, EU Health Commissioner David Byrne refuses to back large scale vaccination, and defends the movement restrictions currently in place.

Day 13
The latest foot and mouth alarm has been sounded on Dartmoor, where there are fears that the virus may have been spread on the wind. Meanwhile the slaughter goes on but is this the best response to the disease? Hear the views of Professor Chris Bostock of the Institute for Animal Health and Abigal Woods, a vet researching the history of foot and mouth at Manchester University.

Day 11
The foot and mouth crisis has prompted the Prime Minister to call for a long hard look at the food and farming industries in Britain. Has the style of farming practised in this country for half a century had its day? Have the very methods which have produced cheap and plentiful food also played a part in the problems suffered by agriculture over recent years?

Day 10
As the disease spreads, the debate moves onto the future. Tony Blair adds his voice to the calls for a radical look at current farming practices in Britain. 'I think we need to sit down with the industry and really work out what the basis is on which we want sustainable farming for the long term - and what price we're prepared to pay for it', he tells a meeting of farmers in Gloucestershire. Meanwhile the The Food Standards Agency orders extra checks on meat imports as remnants of spinal cord are found in two beef consignments from the Netherlands and Germany.

Day 9
There are concerns that the outbreak of foot and mouth could have spread to the Irish Republic. The Unions warn the crisis could lead to job losses. The Chief Veterinary Officer Jim Scudamore says more cases are likely to emerge and that a decision is still being made on whether or not to cull wildlife to prevent further spread of the disease.

Day 8
The first compensation payments for farmers are agreed, but are they enough and are they being fairly distributed? James Black, of the National Pig Association, is concerned that pig farmers are missing out on compensation being offered to beef, dairy and sheep farmers. Meanwhile the Agriculture Minister, Nick Brown, defends the amount of compensation and explains how the strict movement restrictions in some affected areas could be partially lifted to allow farmers to get animals that are ready for slaughter to abattoirs.
