38,000 awaiting slaughter
21,000 awaiting disposal
Day 28, 20th March
Troops are being deployed in Devon today, to help clear a backlog of slaughtered animals. A hundred experts in military logistics will offer advice to civilian contractors who are culling livestock and disposing of carcasses. The extended slaughter of sheep -- including apparently healthy animals -- could begin today in south west Scotland -- one of the areas worst affected by foot and mouth. The Conservatives' agriculture spokesman, Tim Yeo, told us that the government simply wasn't doing enough. Yesterday brought twenty-three new cases of foot-and-mouth -- taking the total to 348.
Day 24
On day 23 of the foot and mouth crisis, debate moved to whether or not it would be appropriate to go ahead with scheduled local government elections (and a possible general election) on May 3. Chair of the Electoral Commission Sam Younger said they're investigating whether a free and fair poll is possible.
Day 23
A hundred thousand sheep look set to be slaughtered in a pre-emptive strike against foot and mouth. Meanwhile the leader of the opposition William Hague says it's too early to know whether or not to postpone the election because of the foot and mouth crisis.
