It has been discovered that King Henry VIII may have been the first king to take part in a football match. However, in those days the sport was a very different affair with no rules.
A clothes historian, Dr Maria Hayward of the Textile Conservation Centre at Southampton University said, 鈥淔ootball wasn鈥檛 a game for gentlemen.鈥
She continued to say that 鈥渢he boots were described as ankle high and costfour shillings which, putting that into context, the yeoman of the robes who was in charge of his clothes was paid a shilling a day.鈥
She believes that although Henry VIII had a reputation for beheading people, he would have been very disappointed if people had let him win. In fact, the first time he turned up to jousting, he turned up incognito.
King Henry VIII sporting prowess may come as a surprise to some people. However there are manyfamous figures whohave shown that they have the necessary skills to become professional players. These include Pope John Paul II, Julio Iglesias and Ralf Little.
