The e-mail had said "no favours but slightly quicker". Mr Blunkett said he had not been aware of its contents and insisted he had done nothing wrong.
But he said questions about his honesty had damaged the government. and for that reason, he decided to resign.
Downing Street has named former听Education Secretary, Charles Clarke听as Mr Blunkett's replacement.
Mr Blunkett took over from Jack Straw as Minister for Home Affairs. He remained in charge for three and a half years during which time the attacks on the twin towers on '9/11' took place.
Following the subsequent wars on Afghanistan and Iraq, he was involved in drawing up some controversial legislation to counter the 'war on terror'. Some of these issues such as compulsary ID cards, and internment without charge for foreign nationals accused of potential acts of terrorism, will be passed onto his successor Charles Clarke.
