Size Zero Culture - Who's to Blame? 07Feb 2007
Young women model knitted Bikinis at Alternative Fashion Week, London
The row over skinny models and whether or not they should be banned from the catwalks has prompted the Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell to put together a task force to tackle the tyranny of thinness among young girls. In the run up to London Fashion Week we ask her how she intends to take on “size zero” culture. And our panel of guests - Achilleas Constantinou, founder member of the British Fashion Council, Nathalie Rykiel, Managing Director of Sonia Rykiel and Elise Slater who designs for a fashion forecaster, discuss to what extent their industry is to blame? Why has the ideal of beauty changed so drastically in the past two decades from the powerful athletic supermodels of the 80’s to the skeletal models you see on the catwalk today?
