On the untold stories of Chinese women听forced to give up听their daughters

Xinran was born in Beijing and brought up during the Cultural Revolution. She became a journalist and radio presenter, and is well known in China for her radio phone-in programme Words on the Night Breeze, in which she invited women to talk about their lives. The show was seen as groundbreaking for its unflinching portrayal of what it meant to be a woman in modern China. Many women wrote to her to share their pain at having to give up their daughters. Xinran joins Jane to discuss her latest book which includes some of their untold stories.

'Messages from an Unknown Chinese Mother听- stories of loss and love', by Xinran, is听published by Chatto and Windus, ISBN: 978-0-701-18402-5
