Couple fight back after forced abortion
China introduced its one child policy almost thirty years ago to curb massive population growth and ensure economic security for its people. Since its inception the government estimates it has prevented four hundred million births. Forced abortions and sterilisation were said to be commonplace in the mid 1980s. One woman who says she was forced to have an abortion at nine months seven years ago has now had her case accepted to be heard in the higher court, a legal first. Jane discusses the case and China鈥檚 one child policy laws with Richard Spencer, China Correspondent for the Telegraph, and Harriet Evans, Professor of Chinese cultural studies at the Centre for the Study of Democracy at the University of Westminster. |
