Bright Girls, Learning To Fail 25 Mar 2008
Schoolgirls sitting an exam
Do high-achieving girls need to learn to fail?

An education expert has warned that schools and parents risk creating a generation of ‘brittle, high achieving’ teenage girls who are ‘unable to cope with failure’ and who fall apart if they can’t live up to their own impossibly high expectations of themselves.

Jane talks to Liz Allen, head teacher at Newstead Wood School for Girls in Orpington in Kent, and Vivian Hill, Director of Educational Psychology at the Institute of Education to look at why it appears educational underachievement or failure is more difficult for young women to process than young men, and if we need to support these girls differently.
