Cosmetic Surgery Backlash 11 Mar 2009
Is cosmetic surgery anti-feminist?

Cosmetic surgery adverts on the London Underground featuring 27 year old Claire Thornton showing her breast enlargement have been defaced with stickers ‘this advert is sexist’ and ‘natural is beautiful’. In the advertÌýClaire describes going from a 34B to a 34DD as ‘the best decision I’ve made’. So are these surgical treatments which were once the preserve of the rich and famous empowering or do they simply undermine women’s confidence in their natural bodies? To discuss the issues Jenni is joined by Ruth Holliday, Professor of Gender and Culture at the University of Leeds and the novelist and journalist Yvonne Roberts. We also hear from Claire Thornton and from Nadia Kamil, a member of a feminist protesting group on Facebook.
