Male prison staff in women’s prisons 4 June 2009
How gender affects staff-prisoner relationships

SomeÌýstaff at New Hall women's prison near Wakefield hold “outdated and inappropriate" attitudes to the women in their care, particularly those with mental health issues, according to Anne Owers,Ìýthe Chief Inspector of Prisons. The newly-publishedÌýinspection report found staff-prisoner relations were generally poor and not helped by a disproportionate number of male staff working at the prison. Jenni talks to Anne Owers, and discusses the wider role gender plays in staff-prisoner relationshipsÌýwith Juliet Lyons, Director of the Prison Reform Trust and Colin Moses, National Chair of the Prison Officers’ Association.
