But the British cherry has suffered in recent years as foreign varieties have edged their way on to supermarket shelves. This Saturday is National Cherry Day which aims to get everyone taking a bite out of a British cherry this summer. Jane speaks to theÌýfood writer and campaigner Henrietta Green and the cherry grower John Leigh-Pemberton about the importance of preserving the great British cherry.

Pepperkake Recipe
100g butter 100g brown sugar 100g black treacle 100g golden syrup 2 eggs 1tsp cinnamon ½Ìý tsp cloves ½Ìý tsp ground ginger ½Ìý tsp black pepper 600g plain flour 1 tsp baking powder 200g chopped cherries
Melt the butter, sugar, treacle and syrup together, leave to cool slightly, mix in the other ingredients. Roll out into thin biscuits and bake at approx 180 C for about 6 mins until golden and firm.
