Hide his gun and you help commit the crime: Metropolitan Police & Trident target young black women in the fight against gun crime

Young black women between the ages of 15 and 19 are being warned about the consequences of carrying guns for others in a hard-hitting advertising campaign which was听unveiled by Trident at the end of September. Trident is the Metropolitan Police鈥檚 anti-gun unit which works closely with the black community in London. Under the strap line: Hide his gun and you help commit the crime, the campaign features radio, cinema and billboard advertisements that warn young women that they could face a prison sentence if they鈥檙e found to be hiding guns. So why has it been deemed necessary to target young women in the fight against gun crime when the perpetrators are mainly young men? And is it right to target young African and African Caribbean women when women from all communities can fall for the wrong man and end up involved in crime? Jenni is joined by Claudia Webbe, Chair of the Trident Independent Advisory Group, and听Ernima Bell, Chair of Carisma, Community Alliance for Renewal, Inner South Manchester Area.
