Children and Screens 19听October 2009
A child playing a computer game
Is screen based techonology a benefit or harm for children today?

Should you ration your children's use of computers, games consoles, TVs and all the other electronic gadgets on the market?听 If you believe some experts, we are in danger of rearing a generation of emotionally stunted children with deficient attention spans, little or no creativity and an inability to interact in the real world,听all because of the excessive time they have spent in front of a screen. But a recent EU report says that computer games teach essential life skills to children, and Mick Brookes, general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers, is calling for a review of the ban on mobile phones in classrooms. So where does this leave a generation of parents grappling with these questions for the first time? Jane听talks to Sue Palmer, a writer and consultant on the education of young children and to Wendy Earle from the education department of the British Film Institute.
