Should people with learning disabilities be supported to have children?
A recent column in听the Sunday Times by Minette Marrin has sparked a debate in the disability rights community. In her article Minette Marrin, who has a special interest in learning disabilities and has been a trustee of charities that support people with learning disabilities, stated with regret, that in her view most people with learning disabilities should not have children. But even the government has recognised their right to do so, 听in a Department of Health report published last January Valuing People Now,听they state their commitment to supporting people with learning disabilities to have relationships and become parents. So is having children a basic human right, or is it the case that given all the support they would need in these cash strapped times, supporting people with learning disabilities to have children is a step too far? I鈥檓 joined by Minette Marrin, and by Mark Goldring, Chief Executive of MENCAP.
