Irish abortion law 10 December 2009
A challenge in the European Court of Human Rights

This week three women living in Ireland identified only as A, B, and C challenged Ireland's strict abortion law in the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. They said that being forced to travel abroad for abortions endangered their "health and well-being" and the ban on abortion in Ireland violates the European Convention on Human Rights. The case marks the first challenge to Ireland's abortion laws in more than 15 years. The Irish Government is arguing that any change to the current safeguards must not be interpreted as endorsing the right to abortion. Jenni talks to Carl O Brien, Chief reporter at the听Irish Times.
